For me, this brief is definitely the most difficult one that we have been given. It is quite complex and will involve a lot of work but nonetheless it will still be a fun brief to tackle. Unfortunately I am not a very good illustrator so I think I will have to stay clear of drawing and maybe go down a different route. I have thought about using loads of colour and using a kind of montage method to make abstract characters/items to go into my book. Hopefully this will look really interesting and will be both fun for children to listen to and for parents to read.
For the subject I would like to tackle, I would very much like to look into autism and finding a useful yet easy way of explaining it to children. When I was at a young age I discovered that a family member had Aspergers syndrome (a form of autism) and I had absolutely no idea what it meant. It was explained to me in a million different ways, but being quite young I just found it very difficult to understand. Therefore I would like to make a book that could help explain to children what autism entails and what affect it has on people, but obviously in a very simple way.
To my knowledge, there are not many children’s books on autism. In the past I have read ‘The curious incident of the dog in the nighttime’ and it is a book written about a young boy with autism. It is very informative but it is aimed at 13 year olds and older, so this would definitely not appeal to a younger child. I will conduct some research into what books are already out there that are aimed at children to describe autism and then go from there.
